The signing ceremony for the project titled Development Response to Displacement Impacts (DRDIP) was held at the World Bank Group Office in Nairobi and was co-presided over by the Executive Secretary of IGAD, Ambassador (Eng.) Mahboub Maalim, and the World Bank Coordinating Director for Regional Integration, Ahmadou Moustapha Ndiaye.
The objective of the project is to improve access to social services, expand economic opportunities, and enhance environmental management for communities hosting refugees in the targeted areas of the participating countries.
In his remarks during the signing ceremony, Ambassador Maalim congratulated the World Bank Group for the better engagement with IGAD and other Regional Economic Communities. “This project is exemplary of the effectiveness of our collaboration with the World Bank Group”, he said.
“I would like to say the timeliness of this project that will help us establish a secretariat that will be a stable platform to address all issues related to forced displacement and mixed migration and operationalize projects like the one we are finalizing this morning”, he said.
“Under the project, IGAD will play a critical role in coordinating a regional response to forced displacement and mixed migration in the Horn of Africa among various humanitarian and development actors, and governments”, were Mr Ndiaye’s words.
