President urges urban administrators to tackle good governance problems

President Dr Mulatu Teshome calls on urban administrations across Ethiopia to attach prime attention to tackling good governance problems.

Dr Mulatu made the call at the ongoing 7th National Urban Forum on Sunday in Gondar city of Amhara state.

President Mulatu acknowledged the significant progress urban centers made in economic, political and social arenas over the past 12 years as part of national endeavor to ensure inclusive and sustained development.

He attributed the achievement to the enabling environment created by the federal developmental democratic system pursued by the nation.

Generating employment opportunities to the jobless including urban dwellers is among the key tasks of the nation’s development policies and strategies, he pointed out.

The President, however, said that urban administrations need to work harder on tackling good governance hurdles, which he believes are holding back economic growth.

According to the President, nothing could be more pressing to urban administrations than taking care of those problems, which he said should be done as soon as possible and with the active involvement of their respective constituent inhabitants.

Dr Mulatu emphasized the urgency of ensuring a sustained urban growth guided by the developmental mind-set.

He also highlighted the crucial role of urban development and housing institutions in the ongoing endeavor to place the nation among middle income countries.

Chief administrator of Amhara state, Gedu Andargachew for his part stressed the decisive role of the National Urban Forum for experience sharing and collaboration on good governance as well as other issues of common concern.

Like the Nations and Nationalities’ Day, the forum also serves participants as a platform to showcase their rich and diverse cultures, Gedu.
