Consultative meeting on Enhancing Remittance to Ethiopia held in Addis

A consultative meeting based on a research report entitled “Enhancing the volume and value of formal remittance to Ethiopia” was held on Thursday in Addis Ababa.

The research proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia and supported by IOM in collaboration with the ACPEU migration action initiative has come up with important findings and recommendations.

 

The forum has been attended by stakeholders including representative of National Bank of Ethiopia, Transaction agencies, Local Think-tank group, MasterCard Ethiopia, AU, International partners and the IOM.

Opening the workshop State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia Mrs. Hirut Zemene noted that remittances are key to economies of countries.

Through different initiatives and approaches the Government of Ethiopia is harnessing the dividend of the Diaspora, she added.

Hirut also said that new research and policy initiatives were introduced by the Government of Ethiopia to further enhance and promote the engagement of the Diaspora.

Chief of Mission and representative of IOM to the African Union, IGAD, and UNECA, Ms. Maureen Achieng on her part said efforts of ensuring the regular migration of citizens is key to ensure the transaction of remittance through the legal channel.

Maureen who commended the efforts made so far also called on all stakeholders to further step up efforts to ensure the transaction of remittances through legal channels.
