City gov’t says teachers’ role, contribution commendable

ADDIS ABABA — THE ETHIOPIAN HERALD Newspaper 19 June 2016: The Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau said that teachers are playing tremendous role in producing ethical and duty-bound citizens who are the lever to advance the transformation agenda of the country.
The Bureau awarded 128 teachers, principals and supervisors selected for their outstanding performance from all sub-cities at a ceremony held at the African Union Headquarters yesterday.
City Administration Social Cluster Coordinator with Rank of Deputy Mayor and Bureau Head Dilamo Ottore said that teachers are the potential arm behind the ever increasing trained human resource. Recognizing the role and contribution of teachers in the overall growth of the country, the city administration is working to improve the lives of teachers, he added.
Accordingly, the head said the city administration has already launched free transport service to teachers. To address the acute shortage of houses, efforts are also underway to benefit 5,000 teachers to have their own houses through the provision of land and priority to condominium houses.
Handing out certificates for model teachers, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen said that understanding the crucial role of teachers in the development of the nation, the government is doing its level best to improve their lives.
The Deputy Premier said that annual award would inspire teachers to do more in shaping the new generation with ethics and knowledge. Noting that the recognition is to acknowledge the huge responsibility of teachers , Demeke reaffirmed the government’s continued support for teachers.
Education Minister Shiferaw Shigute on his part said that teachers’ contribution is recognizable by every citizen for their key role in producing skilled human resource in all sectors.
He said that awarding teachers is not enough, thus, the government has revised their salary scale from grade two to ten. The provision of plots and houses will be effective across the country.
Model teacher from Dil Behibret Kindergarten Yigardu Endeshaw said : ” The award is a lot to me. It would inspire us to further improve our contribution.”
Meskerem Secondary School Deputy Principal Metasebiya Demissie also said that honouring teachers based on their performance is instrumental in gaining better achievements. He also said that the award would inspire him for further success and to be the best in his carrier.
