UNEP applauds Ethiopia’s diversification of energy sources

Ethiopia’s achievement in diversifying energy sources in environmental friendly manner is commendable, according to Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim visited Adama II Wind Farm on Tuesday to have a closer look at the country’s activities to widen energy sources.

The executive director said ”I am very impressed with the variety of sources which Ethiopia wants to explore because you have a big hydropower dam, geothermal, wind and solar sources of energy. The combination of these will give Ethiopia an enormous opportunity to provide electricity to all citizens.”

According to Solheim, UNEP has the desire to support the country in developing its renewable energy and to provide technology that will have a positive impact on reducing pollution.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister, Dr. Shiferaw Teklemariam said Ethiopia is working hard to diversify its energy sources and build a green economy.

The minister stated that Ethiopia has a cooperative framework agreement with UNEP and the partners have been collaborating to widen the accessibility of power in rural areas.

Inaugurated in May 2015, Adama II Wind Farm has a capacity of producing 153 Megawatt of electricity.
