President congratulates Ethiopians over registration of Gada System
President Mulatu Teshome on Thursday congratulated all Ethiopians over the inclusion of Gada, the indigenous democratic socio-political system of the Oromo people, in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
In his message, the president said “we should be proud of Ethiopia which is home to many nations, nationalities and peoples that have gorgeous cultures, values and heritages embedded in diversity”.
The president praised the Oromo people for protecting Gada system jealously and intact.
The announcement of the inscription of Gada system on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage List came Wednesday at the 11th Session of UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) underway in Addis Ababa.
Gada system has been exercised by the Oromos for over 600 years.
