Ethiopia elected as the permanent member of International Labor Organization governing body

 

thiopia was elected as a permanent member of the International Labor Organization governing body on June 12, 2017. The election was held in Geneva during the 106thInternational Labor Conference (ILC).

Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, H.E Abdulfatah Abdullahi, who represented the high level delegation of the Government of Ethiopia in the 106th International Labor Conference (ILC, expressed his great satisfaction after the election.

The governing body is the Executive Organ of the ILO. It is also responsible for taking decision on all ILO polices, adopting ILO programs and budget, electing the Director General of ILO, appointing Commissions of inquiry, supervising the work of the International Labor office and requesting information from member states concerning labor matters among others.

The governing body is composed of 56 regular members including 28 Governments, 14 employers and 14 workers and 66 deputy members comprising 28 Government, 19 employers and 19 workers.

To be elected, a government must obtain more than half of the votes cast by the members of the Electoral College present at the meeting. Ethiopia obtained 238 votes out of 253. Last time Ethiopia has served at the ILO governing body was from1999 to 2002.
